The Cocoon Series: Akwa Nwerre [2013]

Name:

Akwa Nwerre(әkwæ hƱnweirei)

Language:

Igbo (Nigeria)

Description

A sculptural lamp made from a mesh network of date palm bamboo strips entwined with raffia ropes, laid with embedded spongy ropes and tissue paper over acrylic bond adhesive.

Background:

One can always see in the subtle glow of the eggs of amphibians, tiny reddish veins crisscrossed in a meshwork of a translucent and oval form. Akwa Nwerre is amphibious in interpretation, taking the egg as a cocoon.
