The Cocoon Series: Mpatat (2013)

Name:
Mpatat (hu:mpætæt)

Language:
Ibibio (Nigeria)

Description:
A sculptural lamp made from a mesh network of date palm bamboo strips entwined with raffia ropes, dry straw, wood shavings, dried twigs, feathers, dried leaves and embedded palm kernel seeds over acrylic bond adhesive.

Background:
‘Mpatat’ is made from twigs and straws to mimic the building power of the weaver bird.  This is interpreted into an oblong biomorphic form. The layering of the twigs and straws creates a diffused contrast of sharp piercing light with a warm orange glow.
