The Cocoon Series: Zanza [2013]

Name:
Zanza ('za:nzæ)

Language:
Igbo (Nigeria)

Description

A  sculptural lamp made from a mesh network of date palm bamboo strips entwined with raffia ropes, laid with embedded palm kernel seeds, crushed tissue paper, white feathers, pieces of broken glass and tissue paper over acrylic bond adhesive.

Background:
Zanza is an eccentric formation of a mythical bird in an abstracted interpretation of a swirling birdlike creature. The cocoon here depicts a stage in the formation of a phantom creature which has a semblance of what could be perceived to be known, yet elusive.
